Tedelnosho is the Maldene name for The Great Whirlpool. Actually if you consult the dictionary in the back of the book, the literal translation is “really big hole in the water”. So, what’s the behind the scenes stuff on this? Well, first it WAs indeed inspired by our only Earthly bermuda Triangle, only I wanted one that really works. Since Tedelnosho connects up to other places and worlds, it makes for a convenient plot device to bring in other creatures or allow some of the characters to journey to other far off worlds.
But the one thing I obvious thing I added is the fact that this is a whirlpool that never stops, not to mention is about 1500 miles across. Why is this? What inspired it? well, hey if Jupiter can have the never-ending storm that is the Great Red Spot, then why not this? As for the whirlpool thing, I needed a physical manifestation of the local dimensional peculiarities, something visual for that “Wow” factor.
But, is there a reason behind this? An explanation for the constant whirlpool and the gateway to other worlds thing? Yes, of course there is, but being as it’s a pretty big plot point I ain’t saying a thing. I WILL say, though, that the Whirlpool is not the only thing on Maldene that is more than what anyone realizes. You’d be surprised what other little secrets are looking down on everyone.
